Bleachers

I have been doing lots of these with Jenna lately. Mostly the routine goes like this:

Three bleachers
1 lap
25 jump abs
20 jump squats
50 yard lunges
1 lap

Repeat two times.
Sometimes I go from my house to the stadium and C picks me up. Well, just once so far. Climbing has been limited to mainly the gym lately but we have started going outdoors more now that the weather has started to cool and guess what? I've been leading. That's right. LEADING, with the risk of 25 foot falls from clipping into the anchor where you're inset into the wall, and fearlessly I might add.

Winter is Approaching

Fall has made it's way here, the leaves are crunchy and brown and I need a longsleeve tee and fleece to make the twenty minute walk to class from the Sled Shed to the Hinckley

Last weekend (September 14) Jenna, Stephen, Charly, and I left for Maple Canyon Utah. The rock there is cobblestone and some of the most interesting rock I've climbed on. I worked an 11c which became my knew favorite route, and hey, I even took a couple of falls! I also bashed my scar tissue open from my fourth of July mountain biking wreck. One slip against the rock and the whole thing peeled off like grated cheese. It was one of those gushers taken on the last route of the day which was a mere 5.9. What's odd is that the the rope burn I got working on a 13d created more pain than the day I wrecked my knee in the first place. Nevertheless, I smacked that skin back on my knee and bandaged it shut. Oh, and about that 13d... I made it two bolts. Don't get too excited guys. On a harder note,
Charly, Joe, Jake McNair and friends hiked the Grand the weekend before that. I'm just not ready for that stuff quite yet.

Like brother, like brother.

Some road biking stats:
I've been on a couple of really short rides I'm too lazy to post, so here's my long one. Done the Saturday Charly did the Grand.

September 8
Where to: Out near R mountain
Dist: 14.81
Av Speed: 14.2
Max: 23.2
Time: 1:2:34

Some day before that Charly and I did the loop out around R mountain. Here's that:
September 1Where to: Loop around R mountain
Dist: 25.09
Av Speed: 15.3
Max: 26.4
Time: 1:37:14

There was a pretty hard head wind and side wind and I drafted off of Charles the entire time, but coming back was extremely enjoyable. Especially going 24 easy on a slight incline.

Yesterday Jenna, Stephen, and I went up to Blackfoot to can peaches and finish my quilt. Then we climbed at the playground for the first time. It was most likely the hottest day I've ever climbed and therefore I climbed one 5.9 that felt like a 5.11 as the basalt scorched my hands and wasps buzzed by. Even Maycee took a swim in the river. After that we did stadium stairs, ran half a mile, lunges, jump squats, abs, and eights chased by gator jacks. Like the title, winter is approaching and after watching That's it That's all and Art of Flight I am determined to get stronger for backcountry snowboarding, and now I have the sore muscles to prove it.

The Devil's Staircase

Last weekend(August 24) we left at 6:30 Friday night to hike up to Alaska Basin lake near the Tetons. It's a 7.5 mile hike and 2.7 miles in you hit a fork that takes you to the left to Alaska Basin or to the right to Devil's Staircase which is .9 miles long. There are some other trails too but I don't remember what they were.
By the time we made it to the parking lot and to the fork in the trail it was nearing dark so we headed up towards Alaska Basin for about five minutes and found a quaint little area to hike. It was just barely big enough for some gear, a tent, and I fire and was surrounded by a creek on one side.
We chowed down on freeze dried chicken teriyake rice which is actually pretty good and had hot chocolate and oatmeal for breakfast. Needing to be back for Jame's wedding reception in Blackfoot, we decided to ditch our original plans and just head up Devil's Staircase.
All was going well until I got tired and decided to take a shortcut. Charly was ahead of me and instead of taking an extra switchback I started climbing up the ridge about fifteen feet. Besides that constant underlying fear of getting attacked by a rattlesnake, all was good. Then I got to the top. All that was left was loose dirt and pebbles with nothing to grab onto and no way of going back down. I yelled out to Charly a couple of times and he came back only to say he couldn't pull me up because it was too loose for him as well. He ended up balancing me as I took the first step, which I then slipped and grabbed his hand hoping I wouldn't pull him down. With the next step I made it and I don't think Charly was very stoked on the whole idea, seeing as how I only cut out about twenty feet of hiking distance. Hey, I thought it was more, ok.
On our way down from Devil's Staircase we came upon some hikers asking us if this was the trail to Table Rock. Poor fellas. They were three and a half miles into the wrong trail, way out from Table Rock.
We hiked back to our car, grabbed chinese food at Broulims, and went home and took hot showers. A short backcountry camping trip but like I told Charly, in perfect weather like it was, I believe I could honestly live out there.

Yes, I know. My bright red sumo wrestler Burton leggings go perfectley with yellow reflector hiking shoes. I was not counting on it being as chilly as it was, despite the fact that I was very warm in my sleeping bag I should have brought real pants.

Maycee was a good pup for a while, but in the end she squirmed her way into Charly's sleeping bag to sleep and keep warm. The second the morning light hit our tent though she was clawing at it to get out.

View from a third of the way up to Devil's Staircase. There have been a lot of fires recently hence the smoke.

I went mountain biking on the 28 with Stephen, Jenna, Jeremy, Jeremy's friend Beaner, Joe, and Joe's friend Alli. We did Wolverine and biked up for a little while from the bottom while waiting for the shuttle.

August 29
I went on a thirty five minute ride that was just 7.25 about doing temple hill and Poleline. I can't seem to find where I wrote down my times so I'll have to update this later. That same day though Charly came home and wanted to go on a bike ride so I got up and did it again. Here are my times for the second ride of the day:
